Expert Guide: How to Pack Fragile Items

Nothing sours a successful move quite like opening a box in your new home to find broken glassware or shattered ceramics. Packing fragile items requires patience, the right materials, and a bit of expert know-how. Here is how the professionals do it.

Gather the Right Materials

Don't skimp on supplies when it comes to your valuables. You will need:

• Double-walled cardboard boxes: Standard single-wall boxes will crush under pressure.
• Acid-free packing paper: Better than newspaper, which can leave ink stains on ceramics.
• High-quality bubble wrap: For wrapping highly delicate or oddly shaped items.
• Strong packing tape: To secure the boxes firmly.

The "Cushioning" Technique

Before any item goes into a box, you must create a shock-absorbing base. Scrunch up several sheets of packing paper (or use packing peanuts) and create a 2-inch layer at the bottom of the box. Do the exact same thing at the top of the box before sealing it.

Packing Glasses and Mugs

Glasses should always be packed vertically, never on their sides. Wrap each glass individually in packing paper, tucking the edges inside the rim. Place the heaviest, sturdiest mugs at the bottom and lighter, delicate wine glasses at the top.

Packing Plates

Contrary to logic, plates should be packed vertically on their edges, much like records in a crate. Wrap each plate individually and place a layer of bubble wrap between each one. Packing them flat increases the risk of the bottom plates cracking under the pressure.

Electronics and Screens

If you still have the original manufacturer's box and styrofoam inserts, use them! If not, wrap TVs and monitors in specialized screen protectors or thick moving blankets. Secure the blankets with tape (ensuring the tape doesn't touch the screen directly) and pack them upright.

Labeling is Crucial

Once packed, seal the box securely using the 'H-tape' method. Most importantly, write "FRAGILE" clearly on all four sides and the top of the box. Draw an upward-pointing arrow to indicate which way the box should be carried.
