The Ultimate Moving House Checklist
Moving house is often cited as one of life's most stressful events, but it doesn't have to be. The secret to a seamless move is rigorous organization. We've put together the ultimate timeline to keep you on track.
4-6 Weeks Before the Move
- Declutter: Go through every room and ruthlessly sort items into 'keep', 'donate', 'sell', and 'bin' piles.
- Book a Removal Company: Research and book a reputable removal service (like Pack & Attack). Fridays and weekends book up fast!
- Order Packing Supplies: Secure sturdy double-walled boxes, bubble wrap, packing paper, and strong tape.
- Notify Utilities: Inform your broadband, gas, electricity, and water providers of your moving date.
2 Weeks Before the Move
- Start Packing: Begin with non-essential items like out-of-season clothing, books, and decorative pieces.
- Label Everything: Label boxes clearly on the top and side with their destination room and a brief summary of contents.
- Change of Address: Update your address with your bank, employer, DVLA, and the local council.
1 Week Before the Move
- Pack an Essentials Box: Pack a box with items you'll need immediately upon arrival: kettle, mugs, tea/coffee, toiletries, phone chargers, and basic tools.
- Defrost the Freezer: Empty and defrost your fridge-freezer at least 24 hours before moving day.
- Confirm Details: Call your removal company to confirm the arrival time and parking arrangements.
Moving Day
- Final Sweep: Check all cupboards, lofts, and sheds to ensure nothing is left behind.
- Read Meters: Take photographs of the gas, electricity, and water meters in your old home.
- Direct the Movers: Be available to guide the removal team and answer any questions.
By following this checklist, you'll be unpacking in your new home with a cup of tea before you know it.
